Google, Bing and ChatGPT Report Different AI Visibility Signals

Use a five-layer crosswalk to separate crawler access, eligibility, AI appearances, referrals, and on-site outcomes across Google, Bing, and ChatGPT.

Google, Bing, and ChatGPT do not report the same thing when they describe AI visibility. Google’s generative AI report starts with impressions. Bing AI Performance starts with citations and grounding-query classifications. OpenAI documents crawler access and tagged referrals, but does not provide publishers with a comparable citation dashboard.

The mistake is to place all of these numbers in one column called “AI traffic.” A more useful model separates five layers: access, eligibility, appearance, referral, and on-site outcome. Each layer answers a different question and requires a different source.

A crawler request is not an appearance. An appearance is not a visit. A visit is not a conversion. Keeping those boundaries visible prevents a real observation at one layer from becoming an unsupported success claim at another.

What each platform exposes

Google Search Console’s dedicated generative AI report exposes organic impressions by page, country, device, and date. Google says the subset was already included in the overall Web performance totals. The report does not reveal prompts, dedicated click outcomes, or citation counts. Bing AI Performance exposes sampled and aggregated citation observations, grounding queries, cited pages, and preview classifications such as Intent and Topic. Its Citation Share is calculated within an observed grounding query; it is not a universal visibility score. The Bing report guide explains those limits.

OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot access and says ChatGPT referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com. Those controls help a publisher distinguish search discovery from GPTBot training access, but they do not expose every fetch, answer, or citation in a publisher dashboard.

Build one ledger without mixing signals

  1. Name the surface. Record Google AI features, Bing/Copilot, or ChatGPT rather than a generic “AI” label.
  2. Name the layer. Mark every row as access, eligibility, appearance, referral, or outcome.
  3. Save the platform definition. Keep the help-page URL and the date you reviewed it beside the metric.
  4. Preserve the denominator. A share, rate, or comparison is unusable if the population and filters are missing.
  5. Annotate releases. Record content, template, indexing, and measurement changes on the same timeline.
  6. State what the row cannot prove. Add the main interpretation limit before drawing a conclusion.

For example, a rise in Bing citations and a rise in ChatGPT referrals during the same week are two observations, not evidence that one caused the other. Use the small SEO experiment method when you need to test a change.

A weekly cross-platform review

Start with platform-native observations, then connect them only where the timestamp and URL make the relationship defensible. Export Google impressions by canonical page. Export Bing citations and cited pages. Segment analytics for known AI referrers. Finally, review on-site outcomes for those landing sessions.

The resulting brief should say what moved, where it moved, the reporting window, the limits, and the next decision. “Page A gained reported Google generative AI impressions after the update” is supportable. “The rewrite won AI search” is not.
