Perplexity Premium Data Sources: Included and Licensed Access

Perplexity now documents included premium sources and licensed connectors. This access matrix separates plan eligibility, partner entitlements and citation inspection.

This guide turns that distinction into a practical access, procurement and citation audit. The aim is to determine whether another reviewer can reproduce the source path, inspect the cited evidence and understand which subscription enabled it.

The two premium-source classes

Perplexity’s premium data sources page says included sources require no separate login, subscription or activation. Users can select one when starting a search or mention it in the question, subject to plan-based daily limits.

Licensed connectors use an existing provider account. Perplexity says these connectors are available to eligible Pro, Max and Enterprise users who also hold the required partner license.

“Included” describes the account path, not unlimited use or a guarantee that every query will use the source.

Licensed connectors cover several data jobs

The current directory groups licensed connectors around market data and news, private-company intelligence, crypto and account-linked data. Examples include FactSet, Morningstar, Daloopa, Carbon Arc, Guidepoint, Crunchbase, Dun & Bradstreet, Quartr, IBISWorld, Stocktwits, Interactive Brokers, Coinbase and other named providers.

Source selection is not paid ranking

A licensed data connection gives the answering system another permitted source. It does not prove that the source bought organic visibility or will outrank the open web. Keep commercial access, automatic source matching, citations and answer quality as separate claims.

An explicitly selected database is also a different experiment from an unrestricted answer. Record whether the source was selected, mentioned in the prompt or matched automatically.

Audit the citation destination, not only the answer

A premium answer may cite a landing page, an accessible excerpt, a licensed record or a destination another reader cannot open. Reproducibility needs two access checks: could the answering account use the source, and can the reviewing reader inspect the cited evidence?

Score claim support, not answer polish

Break an answer into material claims, then grade each cited destination as full, partial, absent or inaccessible support. Keep source access as a separate field. A fluent answer with three citations can still leave its main number unsupported.

A paired premium-source test

Ask one bounded factual question first with ordinary open-web sources and then with one explicitly selected premium source. Preserve the exact query, source choice, account plan, partner entitlement, answer, citation URLs and timestamp. Repeat once.

Compare source identity, claim coverage and inspectability. A changed answer does not prove the premium source is more accurate, and an unchanged answer does not prove the connector was unused.

Which provider product, seat or dataset is required?
Do individual and organization accounts have the same rights?
What query, export, quote and retention limits apply?
Can every reviewer inspect the citations used in a shared answer?
Who supports failures: Perplexity, the data provider or both?
What happens to saved answers after the partner entitlement ends?

A connector has little review value if the researcher can query it but the editor, compliance reviewer or client cannot inspect the supporting record.

Implications for publishers and data providers

The premium layer creates a visibility path distinct from open-web crawling. Data providers must decide which records, excerpts and citation destinations a licensed answer can expose. Publishers should expect readers to arrive with different access rights, which makes a clear public methodology and stable landing page useful.
