Reddit’s ChatGPT Citation Share Fell 86%
Two independent tracking samples found nearly the same relative decline in Reddit's share of visible ChatGPT citations. Neither study identifies the cause.
Direct answer: Reddit’s average share of visible ChatGPT Search citations fell from 3.83% during July 18–August 7 to 0.52% during August 14–17 in Promptwatch’s monitoring data. That is an 86.4% relative decline between the two periods. An independent AirPulse sample found a similar 85.9% decline.
The agreement makes the change worth investigating. It does not establish that OpenAI penalized Reddit, stopped retrieving Reddit pages, or made the same change across every model, interface, country, and prompt. Both studies measured visible citations—not the complete set of sources retrieved, considered, or used to shape an answer.
What changed in Promptwatch’s data
Promptwatch’s August 18 analysis tracks the daily share of citations pointing to reddit.com in ChatGPT Search responses. Only responses containing at least one citation contribute to the calculation.
Reddit’s citation share averaged 3.83% from July 18 through August 7. The first visible decline began on August 8, when the daily share moved from the high-3% range into the mid-2% range. A sharper break appeared on August 14, when the share fell below 1%. The August 14–17 average was 0.52%.
The commonly reported 86.4% figure compares the two period averages: (3.83 - 0.52) / 3.83. It is more precise to say the later four-day average was 86.4% below the earlier baseline average—not that every site, prompt, or ChatGPT user experienced an 86.4% change in four days.
The same Promptwatch report found less severe movement on Google’s answer surfaces. Google AI Overviews moved from a 2.37% average in the first seven days of its comparison to 2.10% in the final seven, an 11.3% relative decline. Google AI Mode moved from 2.22% to 1.54%, a 30.5% decline. Those changes were more gradual than the ChatGPT break.
An independent sample found nearly the same relative decline
AirPulse published an independent analysis on August 20 using 419 fixed brand-prompt pairs across 22 collection records. Its matched ChatGPT cohort contained 8,464 successful observations and 88,659 citations.
In that sample, Reddit’s citation share fell from 2.057% in the baseline period to 0.289% in the event period—a relative decline of 85.9%. The share of answers containing at least one Reddit citation also fell, from 12.734% to 2.984%, a 76.6% relative decline.
The absolute percentages do not match Promptwatch because the prompt sets, models, interfaces, locations, and sampling rules differ. The important replication is the direction and relative magnitude: two independent monitoring systems found a mid-August ChatGPT-specific decline of roughly 86%.
| Study | Baseline share | Later share | Relative change | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | 3.83% | 0.52% | -86.4% | Public report does not disclose the full prompt, model, region, or daily response composition |
| AirPulse | 2.057% | 0.289% | -85.9% | Matched brand-prompt sample is not a census of all ChatGPT Search activity |
Replication reduces the chance that the entire pattern came from one vendor’s collection failure. It does not identify a cause, make either sample globally representative, or turn an observational comparison into an OpenAI product announcement.
Citation share is not retrieval share
A visible citation is one measurable output of an answer system. It is not a complete trace of how the system searched, ranked, filtered, summarized, or composed the response.
OpenAI documents that ChatGPT Search may rewrite a question into targeted queries and issue additional searches after reviewing initial results. The public product does not expose a complete source-consideration log. A Reddit page could be retrieved but not cited, used for orientation but not attribution, mentioned without a link, or excluded before generation. The published citation studies cannot distinguish those paths.
| Measurement layer | What it can show | What it cannot show alone |
|---|---|---|
| Visible citation | A linked source appeared in the answer or sources interface | Every document retrieved or considered |
| Retrieval | A document entered an observable retrieval pool | Whether it influenced the final claim |
| Mention or recommendation | A brand, product, or community appeared in the answer | Whether a particular page caused the mention |
| Referral and conversion | A visit or outcome reached an owned property | All zero-click exposure inside the answer |
This is why our review of ChatGPT’s visible search-call syntax treats retrieval, influence, citation, and referral as separate observations. A citation decline is meaningful, but it should not be renamed a retrieval collapse.
Why the cause remains unresolved
Several mechanisms could produce the chart. ChatGPT may have changed source ranking, query routing, citation selection, or duplicate filtering. A model or interface rollout could have changed the mix of responses in the sample. The prompt mix could have shifted toward topics where Reddit is less likely to be cited. A measurement pipeline could also have changed which citations were captured.
Promptwatch separately observed a large change in visible search fan-out on August 8. Its search-call analysis found the share of calls using a site: operator rose from 0.37% to 16.8%, while average queries per answer increased from about 1.08 to 1.83. That timing could help explain the first dip.
It does not fully explain the sharper break below 1% on August 14, six days later. A mechanism that fits one date is not automatically the cause of a second change.
AirPulse also found a composition problem inside its matched dataset. One model configuration that previously had a comparatively high Reddit share contributed 2,144 baseline observations but only 15 event observations; another model grew from 193 to 702. That shift can explain part of the pooled result. Yet Reddit also declined inside several continuing model-and-interface strata, including drops of 78.2%, 86.7%, and 100% in specific strata. Another major model increased from 0.288% to 0.696%, so the effect was not universal.
The most defensible current interpretation is a ChatGPT-specific change involving routing, source selection, model or surface composition, or some combination. There is no published evidence of a Reddit penalty, a partnership change, or one system-wide rule.
The company-level results are mixed
AirPulse’s company-level comparison provides another reason to avoid a universal claim. Reddit citation share decreased in 14 of 22 records, increased in five, and tied in three. Its exact two-sided sign test produced p = 0.064, just above the conventional 0.05 threshold.
That does not erase the large pooled decline. It shows that citation volume and sample composition matter: a strong aggregate effect can coexist with noisy or reversed company-level results. The number of citations per observation actually rose from 9.23 to 15.56, so the Reddit decline was not caused by ChatGPT simply returning fewer citations overall.
AirPulse reported descriptive increases for documentation and help pages, from 4.945% to 7.871%, and for monitored owned pages, from 3.116% to 5.458%. Those categories may have taken more share in its sample, but the data does not establish a one-for-one replacement of Reddit citations.
Reddit told Axios that it did not see a meaningful business impact because large language models send little traffic to Reddit. That is a company response about business impact, not an explanation of the citation change.
What publishers and brands should do
- Keep Reddit in the research mix. A decline on one answer surface is not evidence that community discussion stopped affecting discovery, product research, Google results, or human decisions.
- Measure surfaces separately. Track ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Perplexity as distinct products. The different movements in these studies show why a blended “AI visibility” score can conceal the useful signal.
- Record model and interface context. Save model, client, account state, region, prompt, date, citations, and Sources-panel links. Our cross-platform AI visibility measurement guide explains why interface composition belongs in the record.
- Pair visibility with referrals. A cited URL, a brand mention, and a session in analytics are three different events. Use the AI referral tracking guide to keep them separate.
- Do not chase a temporary source mix. Build useful first-party evidence, clear documentation, accurate entities, and accessible pages. If crawler access is a concern, use the AI crawler decision guide instead of reacting to one chart.
For teams that monitor AI answers weekly, the operational trigger should be persistence. Keep a fixed prompt panel for four weekly windows. Investigate a source or model change only when the direction survives that matched comparison and appears in more than one account, interface, or geography.
A replication plan for the next four weeks
A useful follow-up study would freeze a panel of informational, commercial, local, news, and community-seeking prompts. Run each prompt in fresh conversations across at least two ChatGPT Search interfaces, two account states, and two regions. Repeat the collection on the same weekday and local time for four weeks.
For every response, record whether it contains a citation, the total citation count, every cited host and URL, visible brand mentions, Sources-panel links, and any observable retrieval payload. Report both citation share and the percentage of answers with at least one Reddit citation. Keep failed and uncited responses in a separate denominator report rather than silently discarding them.
Publish results by model and interface before pooling them. If a model disappears or a traffic source changes during collection, close that observation period and start another. This prevents a composition change from being presented as a ranking change.
The strongest next result would not be a larger headline number. It would show whether the decline persisted, which strata produced it, and whether Reddit’s visible citations moved independently from retrieval, mentions, and referrals.
Sources, method, and limits
Sources: Promptwatch’s August 18 Reddit citation-share report and August 10 search-fan-out analysis; AirPulse’s August 20 independent observational study; OpenAI’s current ChatGPT Search documentation and 2024 Reddit partnership announcement; and Reddit’s attributed response reported by Axios. Links appear beside the claims they support.
Method: SearchEngineAnswer compared the reported periods, recalculated the two relative declines from the published values, separated pooled results from company and model strata, and classified each explanation as observed, plausible, or unverified.
Limits: Neither public report provides a census of ChatGPT Search. Promptwatch does not publish the complete prompt list, daily sample counts, raw citations, model and surface composition, or margin of error on the cited page. AirPulse publishes more sample and stratum detail but withholds prompts and raw URLs for privacy. SearchEngineAnswer did not independently reproduce the collection.
The reliable conclusion is narrow: two monitoring samples detected a large mid-August decline in Reddit’s share of visible ChatGPT citations. The cause—and the extent to which the change affects retrieval, recommendations, or traffic—remains unresolved.
