Google Tests ‘Dive Deeper’ Overviews Inside Discover Video Cards
The limited Discover experiment adds a topic overview between some video cards and related web stories. Its effect on publisher clicks remains unmeasured.
Google is testing a “Dive deeper” control on videos in Discover. The control can open a short topic overview with links to related stories, community reactions and original reporting before the reader chooses a publisher destination.
This is an experiment, not a confirmed global rollout. Google has not published click-through data, eligibility rules or a promise that every video card will receive the treatment.
Google confirmed the experiment, starting with videos
Google product lead Robby Stein described the test on September 20 as a new way to explore a topic and discover related web content in Discover. Google is starting with videos and plans to test multiple designs over the coming weeks.
A reported example of the interface shows the overview surface after the control is selected. That observation helps document the test, but it does not establish its traffic effect.
The potential click path now has an additional decision
Current card path: Discover card → publisher or video destination.
Test path: Discover video card → Dive deeper overview → related publisher story or other destination.
The extra surface can create more opportunities to expose related reporting. It can also create another place where the reader stops. Both outcomes are plausible. Neither has been measured publicly for this test.
The article links shown inside an overview may also distribute attention differently from the original video card. Publishers should avoid assuming that inclusion guarantees a click or that an extra step guarantees a loss.
Five operating details remain unknown
- Which videos, topics, languages, countries or accounts are eligible.
- How Google selects and orders the related stories.
- Whether the original video’s publisher receives special prominence.
- How often a reader opens the overview and then selects an external result.
- Whether impressions and clicks receive a distinct Search Console classification.
Google’s statement that several designs will be tested is a warning against treating one screenshot as the final product contract.
Measure the card, overview and destination separately
| Stage | Record | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Video card | Topic, source, account, country, device, timestamp and visible control | Eligibility across all Discover traffic |
| Overview | Summary text, linked domains, order, original-source placement and community elements | That every visible source influenced the summary |
| Destination | Final URL, redirect path, publisher, page type and return behavior | Traffic volume from one manual visit |
| Performance | Discover clicks and impressions before and after comparable exposure | Causation without a stable comparison group |

What publishers can check without guessing
- Capture the ordinary video card and Dive deeper state when both are available for the same topic.
- Record whether the original source remains visible before scrolling.
- Count distinct publisher domains and note repeated domains without calling the order a ranking factor.
- Compare the overview’s claim wording with the linked passages.
- Watch Discover performance for affected videos, but keep seasonality and topic demand in the comparison.
- Save design changes because Google says multiple treatments are planned.
Use the Discover image-thumbnail checks for existing media requirements and the preferred-sources guide for the separate publisher-following control. Neither feature documents inclusion in Dive deeper.
The next useful evidence is behavioral
The confirmed change is an interface experiment that places an overview between some Discover videos and related web content. The traffic consequence remains unknown.
The story should be updated when Google documents availability, Search Console reporting, source-selection behavior or when a stable sample can compare publisher clicks with and without the overview. Until then, “new click layer” is supported. “Publisher traffic loss” is a hypothesis.
